Relaxed Houghton House Wedding Portraits

Dramatic Houghton House Wedding Portraits | Bedfordshire

Molly and Tommy officially tied the knot at Ampthill Registry Office, marking the joyous start of their adventure. Because of strict room capacities at the registry, there was sadly no space for my camera gear inside. But am I one to let a tiny room ruin the fun? Absolutely not. Instead, we packed up the good vibes and set off for their Houghton House wedding portraits. Ultimately, this epic, mysterious Bedfordshire location is one of my all-time favourite spots to shoot.

Moody Ruins and Panoramic Views

If you’ve followed my journey, you know I am completely obsessed with moody, abandoned buildings. For instance, this Grade I-listed ruined mansion is perched like a boss on the hillside. Consequently, it ticks every single box for a creative, dramatic backdrop. The views stretching out from the hilltop are jaw-dropping. Furthermore, when you pair that panoramic countryside magic with golden-hour light, every image looks like a scene straight out of a gothic romance novel.

A Historic Playground for Photographers

Built between 1615 and 1621, this estate once stood tall with fancy interiors long before it became a hotspot for modern couples. Fascinatingly, fast forward to 1794, and the owner literally sold off the roof. As a result, the building was left as the ultimate outdoor playground.

Today, those shadowy corners and enormous stone arches are perfect for atmospheric, candid shots. The crumbling columns provide the kind of natural framing that makes Houghton House wedding portraits sing. Honestly, the place is haunted in the best way possible not by ghosts, but by the undeniable charm of history.

Uninterrupted Magic and Spontaneous Fun

When we arrived for this part of their story, we had the entire estate to ourselves. Usually, this spot is crawling with fellow history nerds and dog walkers. Therefore, having it completely empty meant we could capture totally uninterrupted, relaxed moments. Molly and Tommy were an absolute dream in front of the lens. In fact, they were up for every creative idea I threw at them, even when I led them into the slightly spooky, shadowed nooks.

Capturing the Authentic Energy

We made the most of every incredible angle the ruins have to offer. To achieve this, I used my go-to Sigma 1.4 lens for dreamy, intimate close-ups, and my versatile Sigma 24-70mm 2.8 zoom. Specifically, the zoom was perfect for wide shots, allowing the couple to truly pop against the vibrant orange bricks.

Eventually, Molly’s heels gave up the ghost against the rough terrain. Without missing a beat, Tommy gave her a piggyback. Undeniably, that spontaneous chivalry resulted in the absolute cutest photo of the day. They laughed the whole time and totally trusted my vision. Ultimately, it is that kind of unpretentious, joyful energy that makes you forget your memory cards are nearly full.

Part Two is Coming Soon

This Houghton House wedding portrait session was only part one of their story. Next up, their massive celebration with family and friends is happening in August, and I am buzzing to be shooting it. Naturally, being invited back to capture the full party vibes after this stunning, intimate session is an absolute dream.
